Artist: Michol Hebron, Joseph DeLappe
Media: DeLappe: Performance, Interventions, Sculpture, imaging, drawing/painting. Hebron: Video Art, Performance Art, New Media
Micol Hebron is a Video and Performance artist who, for the past 15 years, has worked out of Los Angeles. She has studied at multiple schools like UCLA and the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Venice, Italy. She founded Gallery B-12 which is an artist-run exhibition in Hollywood. She founded the LA Art Girls in 2004 which includes 30+ women artists in the LA area. Joseph DeLappe is a professor of Games and Tactical Media at a school called Abertay University which is located in Dundee, Scotland. He relocated in 2017 after directing a Digital Media Program at the University of Nevada, Reno for 23 years. His work has been in exhibitions all over in countries like Spain, China, and Germany. In 2013, DeLappe rode a special bike in order to draw a chalk line 460 miles long the Nellis Air Force Range to be able to create a solar farm that could power all of the USA.eph has been interviewed on different news and radio shows like CNN, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and CBC.
Since both artists make completely different forms of art, there are a lot more differences than there are similarities. The first and most obvious one being Micol making art on Feminist Activism and Joseph making art on Video games. But I believe there are two similarities between the two artists which are that some of their art is related to the female anatomy and some of their art are related to first-world problems. DeLappe’s art speaks more on gun violence, climate change, and racism while Micol’s art speaks on women’s equality and feminist activism. From the research I’ve done, Micol Hebron doesn’t have paintings or drawings, she has sculptures and different types of photos. Her sculptures mainly are of the female reproductive system specifically the vagina. And those sculptures are made of all different materials like crystals. She also has pictures of her topless. One of those pictures being in front of the camera which a lot of other nipples covering the screen while her own chest is in the background and the last one is her in a truck topless. DeLappe’s has made a lot of art. From rubber stamps that make a “hands up, don’t shoot” symbol to programming GTA to represent the number of deaths that happen in the USA. He also has drawings and paintings, one of which is called “virtual paintings”. “Virtual paintings” depicts a virtual reality exhibition where a woman is trying out the Oculus Rift which is a Virtual Reality device. He uses straight lines in order to create the lady’s striped shirt and uses what looks like water paint in order to color the painting and add texture to the painting as well.
People may ask why these artists decide to make the art that they have made. I believe it’s clear for everyone to see. It’s the world, it’s the way people are and the decisions they make. Some of which would say are not the right decisions. Although they could’ve made their voice heard another way, they found a way that they were passionate about and luckily, they became very well known due to it.
I can’t really relate to these artists but I support the work that they’re doing. I especially support DeLappe’s video game work because of the GTA program that he did. I really like the GTA video game because it had a good story to it. I think both Micol and DeLappe’s work is very critical and essential to society these days and I’m glad that they found a way to share their voice and express their minds in ways that worked out best for them.
